Mushrooms Canada
There’s something magical about a walk in the forest with a basket and mushrooms canada-picking knife in hand. But this activity is not without its risks. Mushrooms are not only edible, they can also contain dangerously high levels of toxins that could cause death or serious illness. This is why it’s important to learn about the different types of mushrooms, and always err on the side of caution when going out on your own.
Mushrooms are the fruit-like, spore-bearing parts of various fungi. Hundreds of different species grow wild across Canada, from the US border to the Arctic and from sea level up to alpine environments. Some of them are widely known as edible, like chanterelles (Cantharellus species), pine mushrooms (Tricholoma species) or portobellos (Mushroomia porcinia). Others, like fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) and deadly galerina (Galerina marginata) are poisonous to varying degrees.

Taking magic mushrooms (psilocybin and psilocin) can cause you to see, hear, or feel things that aren’t there, and can make you anxious, afraid, excited or paranoid. It’s illegal to grow, sell, or possess magic mushrooms in Canada without a license or special exemption.
The City of Winnipeg does not offer special permits or zoning considerations for mushroom dispensaries. But some communities have tried to ease the regulatory burden by setting up community-based mushroom clubs and allowing foraging on private land. If you decide to try mushroom foraging, always have a mushroom identification guidebook, a mesh bag, a knife and gloves on hand. And remember that it’s best to stay with experienced foragers to avoid picking mushrooms that are poisonous or toxic.
